Blood Head

Posted in Art by petercombe on September 12, 2009

The National Portrait Gallery in London unveiled the latest addition to its collection by the artist Marc Quinn: a cast of the artist’s head, made from his frozen blood. Quinn created the work, called “Self,” in 2006 using about nine or ten pints of his blood. It is the fourth in a larger series that Quinn has been working on since 1991, in which he creates a new cast of his head every five years to document his aging process. The National Portrait Gallery paid about $500,000 for the 2006 sculpture.
