I saw this exhibition of Katy Grannan’s work ‘Boulevard’ at the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco last month and was blown away by the large format photographs. These pictures were made over the past three years in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Shooting against white stucco walls in strong midday light, the city streets became Grannan’s outdoor studio. The characters who populate most of Grannan’s Boulevard Series are a parade of down and outers and eccentrics.

So unique. I get sick of seeing pictures of nothing but 20-somethings. I love this. Thank you for sharing!

Totally mind blowing. Glossy but compelling eeriness pervades the whole set. And at the first glance I thought they’re waxworks. The subjects on view seem to be cranky old dames into high fashion. To call them Karl Lagerfeld-esses would be not far from the mark.
